Artist Statement

An artist’s statement is hard to formulate. So much thought, memory,
processing, questioning, seeking, probing, striving, finding, misplacing, swearing
and praying goes into the whole process of art making. How to condense it all
down in order for a few sentences to relay what is meant is a great undertaking.
Words to describe internal musing and external manifestations are not
always easy to find.

Art making is a long journey. It encompasses one’s whole life lived up to the
present moment, even those bits and pieces that translate themselves into one’s
work when we are not even looking. And, the things that we do, see, hear, feel,
taste, touch; the places we’ve lived, or traveled to; the houses, boats, cabins,
rooftops, caves, sandy beaches, stars and trees that we’ve slept in, on or under,
for long durations or short; the people who have left marks, light touches or deep
wounds, or passed by at a distance, all the kisses kissed; dreams at night vaguely
remembered or vividly recalled years later; hopes and fears grasped at, run from,
still wished upon; things said or not and often wishing we had or not; all the
books consumed and images seen, stored away for future use or lost on the
dusty shelves of our memory ⎯ that’s somewhere in there, too; words written
long ago, on pages inside cardboard boxes stored away; poem fragments that
surface with a sound or smell; and, voices, so many, many voices.

This is my work. Each piece, image, color, symbol is a thread that one could
grasp and follow back through the labyrinth of stories I have ever encountered.
They lead back and forth, to and from all the bits and pieces that influence this
very moment. If we each follow our own threads back far enough, maybe off to
the sides and beyond if necessary, we would find that our threads join. We are all
connected ⎯ to all memories.

This work is a reminder that we are connected: through all the love, hurt, laughter
and searching that has ever happened to anyone of us at any time in history. And
again, our threads join ⎯ as you read this and view my work.
